My Story

My curiosity is the engine that powers me as I craft an outside-the-box, adventurous career through media, design, and tech.

Born to Perform
When I slipped my parents’ grasp and climbed on stage during a live dance performance at the local fair, I could barely walk. A few years later, I leaped into a pool before I knew how to swim. Fast forward to kindergarten where I led the playground dig to the other side of the world, convincing everyone that with just a little bit more effort and a few more buckets of dirt we would get there. My endurance, pioneering-spirit, and passion for performance were obvious, and I knew early on that I would want to use my energy and passions to improve how people see and work with one another in the world.
Many Professional Lives
Four years at The Madeira School, three more years at Wellesley, and a year studying abroad at The National Theater Institute and in Paris brought me to the lobby of a women’s boarding house in Manhattan. It was the only place I could afford while working a full-time job as a production assistant in public television. That was over twenty years ago.  Since then, I’ve worn more than a dozen different hats from researcher, to fact-checker, associate producer, producer, editor, show host, fellow, founder, manager, project leader, and board member.
My bet throughout my career has been that staying flexible and learning new skills would make me a more resilient and agile professional.
I put myself through graduate school twice. The first time was at American University in Washington, D.C. to pursue a passion in film and media production. The second time, I pushed through my math anxiety to pursue a master’s in business administration with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I worked full time while pursuing both degrees because I find school is a lot more fun – and a lot more useful – when you can go from the classroom one day to applying what you learn the next day in the real world.
My bet throughout my career has been that staying flexible and learning new skills would make me a more resilient and agile professional. So far, that bet has paid off. My continued investment in my growth and development allowed me to change career tracks multiple times and gather the skills and experience I wanted and needed. All along the way, I discovered new strengths, talents, and passions.

There have been incredible highs and funemployment bumps along the way. All throughout, I have been gifted with remarkable mentors and learning opportunities. I've also had the chance to meet many of my heroes. I am grateful to each of them for fueling me to continue investing in myself and my dreams.

Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, I see a long season of constant change. I believe this new season brings an opportunity to think differently about how we invest in ourselves and in one another. Everything from how we build careers to how we form families is going to change even more radically than it has over the past twenty to thirty years. This will change how we think about what constitutes an education, a career, a friendship, and a community.

We will continue to change how we think about and build networks -- whether they be media networks or professional networks. Data will become even more valuable as the powers of compute to process it continue to scale. That exponential growth in computing power will unearth new opportunities at the intersection of media, technology, and design, bringing ever more powerful tools online and making them widely available.
I believe this is a time uniquely suited to my talents and passions, and I'm excited to meet this new wave head-on.
Meeting the moment
I purposefully built my career to meet this moment of radical change. Years of pivoting and diving into new disciplines to learn and grow has given me strength and a wealth of experience to draw on. I believe this is a time uniquely suited to my talents and passions, and I'm excited to meet this new wave head-on.

Navigating the next decade won't be any easier than previous seasons. It will require resilience, focus, and a lot of energy. It will also require deep connection, stronger community bonds, and what I like to call Pragmatic Optimism. This means we'll need new kinds of leaders able to effectively navigate the attention economy, speak across lines of difference, and help people find common ground.
My Why
The stories of our lives matter, and sharing them in a way that is authentic to us is how we open the door to connect with one another. This is why I am passionate about media and how we come together to design, develop and use it. It's also why you won't find my resumé on this site. A resumé isn't an authentic way for me to share my journey, and they're becoming less useful as technology evolves. (If you want to read mine, you can head over to LinkedIn where I occasionally make updates.)

The need for a home authentic to my story and ideas is why I teamed up with the design team at Retrospect Studios to build this experience. In the lead-up to this period of exciting change, I wanted to think differently about how I share my story and how I connect with others.
The stories of our lives matter, and sharing them in a way that is authentic to us IS HOW WE open the door to connect with one another.
If you’re here wondering whether I am a good fit for a project, a job, or a collaboration, then you’ll want more than my resumé. You’ll want to get to know me, my talents, my skills, and my story. Eventually, after exploring this space, you may want to pierce the technological veil to know if I have the temperament and the experience to step into the arena with you. That's why I commissioned this experience. Consider it the open door to a real-world connection. I hope you'll step through.

REFLECTIONS

Emi has (and will) accomplished so many things that are outside herself. She has earned the right to do things for herself which will make twice the impact of any of the previous amazing things.

Emi has incredible determination to push for what she believes and to be a fierce advocate for others, especially when there is an imbalance of power.

“Emi experiments and iterates quickly, doesn’t shy away from speaking the truth to power, and is a sharp strategist— she has an uncanny ability to play chess while others are playing checkers.
